London Events March Edition (COVID-19 update)

My monthly roundup of the best mountain and adventure related events in the London area. The aim is to get inspired and encouraged by talks and films, to meet like-minded individuals, and to escape the hectic nature of the big city for an evening or two. The events run chronologically from top to bottom… I hope to see you out there!

London Climbing Festival

12:00-20:30, Saturday 7th March, HarroWall Climbing Centre

The first ever London Climbing Festival, celebrating the London climbing scene. The team behind the UK’s largest bouldering gym are putting on a motivational and educational climbing focused event, celebrating the culture surrounding the iconic sport. There will be: 

  • Talks (with a keynote speech delivered by legendary climber Lynn Hill)
  • Workshops
  • Product Demos
  • Trade Stalls with incredible gear deals
  • Cafe & Bar (Camden Hells only £3 a pint)

Their mission is to bring climbers from all walks of life together, in order to contribute to the future of climbing whilst honouring the past. They stress this is an extremely inclusive event for anyone with an interest in climbing!

2020 Banff Mountain Film Festival Tour 

19:30pm, 10th-14th, 16th-23rd March, Union Chapel, Islington

Billed as ‘The best new films from the world’s most prestigious film festival’ The Banff Mountain Film Festival is an international film competition and annual presentation of short films and documentaries about mountain culture, sports, and the environment. Split into two ‘Red’ and ‘Blue’ programmes with 8 and 7 films per programme respectively there is plenty of adventure sport documentary to sink your teeth into. The screenings are being shown throughout March at the beautiful setting of the Union Chapel in Islington and will no doubt show off some incredible and inspiring feats ready to get the blood pumping and heart racing. The Alpine Club London Lecture: Victor Saunders/Nicholas Smith: Sikkim Himalaya

19:30-21:30, Tuesday 10th March, The Alpine Club

Victor Saunders and Nicholas Hurndall Smith talk about their recent expeditions to Sikkim in the Himalayas. Conditions and weather always present challenges in Sikkim but this remote and beautiful area has a unique draw. This should be an interesting and exciting account of their expedition.

Kendal Mountain Festival Tour 2020 – London

19:00-21:30, Wednesday 11th March, Rio Cinema, Dalston

A collection of short films in what promises to be a thrilling night of adventure hosted by the famous Kendal Mountain Festival.

Telling stories of human endurance set in breathtaking environments, the evening will also host Anna McNuff, an endurance athlete and adventurer who will appear on stage to share first-hand her inspirations and challenges. In addition to this there will be prizes from some of the tour partners featuring names such as Fjällräven and LoweAlpine.

Four Seasons Film Festival

20:00-22:00, 16th-20th, 23rd March, The Charlotte Street Hotel & The Soho Hotel

Fourteen films, across five nights, showcasing adventures from four seasons. This is due to be a celebration of storytelling inspired by nature and adventure. The film showings conclude on the 23rd March with the presentation of six festival awards featuring live music and a bar.

Scientific Exploration Society AGM: George Bullard – Rewild Humans

19:00-20:30, Wednesday 18th March, The Park Tower, Knightsbridge

An evening talk by George Bullard, world record-breaking explorer, endurance athlete and speaker. George’s mission is to ‘rewild humans’ by inspiring them to engage with the outdoors and enabling them to consider that adventures may just give them something that no other thing can give.

The Alpine Club London Lecture: Will Brant – British Army explores Baffin Island

19:30-21:30, Tuesday 24th March, The Alpine Club

Evening lecture from Will Brant. In May 2019 a team of 12 British Army personnel travelled to Baffin Island to explore the Auyuittuq national park on skis, they took on un-skied peaks and couloirs and also witnessed the impact of climate change in the Arctic first hand. This talk focuses on their adventures and is sure to be extremely interesting and inspiring.

Sidetracked Magazine Live: Documenting Adventure

18:00-22:00, Tuesday 24th March, Fourpure Brewing Co. Basecamp

A night of exploration, films, photography, fantastic craft beer, and loads more. Live and onstage. Launched in partnership with All Conditions Media this event will be packed with fascinating speakers, beautiful adventure films, and an exhibition by some of the world’s best photographers, all focusing on ‘documenting adventure.’ I’m really excited about this one as I think it will be incredibly interesting and useful to me in relation to this blog. I’ll definitely be attending and will report back on my findings!
